Santora Confirms $410,000 in Grant Funding for Local Roadway, Sidewalk improvements
HARRISBURG – Rep. James R. Santora (R-Delaware) announced that the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) today met and approved $410,000 in grants for roadway and sidewalk improvements in Upper Darby Township.

For improvements adjacent to Aronimink Station on the SEPTA 101 trolley line in Drexel Hill, the first grant provides $326,632 of the total cost of $502,510. The project includes the construction of safety and streetscape improvements at the intersection of Ferne Boulevard and Burmont Road, traffic calming circles, and a new pedestrian crossing at the SEPTA tracks intersection with Burmont Road. Redesign of the intersection will enhance traffic accessibility and pedestrian safety.

“As more businesses come into the area, like Station Tap and Holiday Inn, traffic allowances must be made. To boost business in the area, we must ease the traffic strain before it discourages patrons,” Santora said.

Following the completion of the Holiday Inn Hotel being built beside the Drexelbrook Catering and Special Event Center, 31 new jobs are expected to be available. The transportation improvements will also assist with the increased traffic generated by the hotel.

The second grant will offset costs to make roadway and sidewalk improvements in Drexel Hill. The project includes the demolition and construction of concrete roadway, curbing and sidewalks with an ADA-compliant curb ramp of the 300 block of Edmonds Avenue in front of the Garrettford Fire Company. The improvement will provide enhanced service and safety to the township, vehicles and pedestrians. The $83,254 grant will help finance the project, which costs $118,935.

“Garrettford is our only all-volunteer fire company in Upper Darby, and the firefighters work cooperatively with our career firefighters from other companies in the area. This grant will help to pay for the costly project of installing an apron curb,” Santora said.

Both grants are funded through Act 89 of 2013. The Transportation Plan invests $2.3 billion into transportation maintenance, as well as highway and bridge capital projects.

The CFA was established as an independent agency of the Commonwealth and holds fiduciary responsibility over the funding of programs and investments in Pennsylvania’s economic growth.
