Santora, McGarrigle Announce $1 Million Grant for Drexeline Shopping Center
DREXEL HILL – Rep. James R. Santora (R-Delaware) and Sen. Tom McGarrigle (R-Chester/Delaware) announced a $1 million grant to aid in the development of Drexeline Shopping Center and a residential loft complex in Upper Darby Township.

The funding will be used to redevelop the Drexeline Shopping Center at the intersection of State and Township roads. The property will become a walkable, mixed-use development designed to better serve the growing local population.

“This project will boost our local economy as people patronize businesses that will be part of the shopping center. It will also provide employment opportunities,” Santora said. “Our area will see significant benefits because of this project.”

The shopping center complex will provide approximately 790 permanent jobs and 460 temporary construction jobs.

An existing ShopRite grocery store and four other buildings will be demolished and rebuilt to become the center of the site plan, surrounded by a mix of new commercial and public amenities.

“This grant is further proof of the commitment that Rep. Santora, Gov. Wolf and I have to the Drexeline Shopping Center project that will benefit the local community at large by providing more opportunities in the area for shopping, housing and employment,” McGarrigle said.

The center will include a new multi-level grocery store with café, a 70,000-square-foot medical office building, a police substation and underground parking. A separate, 130-unit residential loft complex that will sit adjacent to the shopping center is also being developed.

“Thanks to Rep. Santora, Sen. McGarrigle and Gov. Tom Wolf for their commitment to the project and community. Without their advocacy and dedication, this project would not have received such substantial funding from the state,” added P. David Bramble, managing partner of MCB Real Estate LLC, which is developing the property in joint venture with the Hampshire Companies.

The project will be funded by a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant. RACP projects are state-funded projects that cannot obtain primary funding under other state programs. RACP is a Commonwealth grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.
